Finishing up the Mural!! Week of 8/10

Yesterday we basically finished the WHS Science & Environmental Stewardship mural!
What an amazing project it has been and what a transformation. The hallway is now a colorful destination for students and no longer a boring corridor of blank walls. We are excited to hear the student reaction to the mural in the fall. Hopefully, our project will inspire other students to create more murals throughout the school!

The Title panel, with our quote (that we made up): "To create a better future, you must envision it first"

There are 6 technology "gears"-- the 5 gears surrounding the main cog each have a motif from the rest of the panels (a wind turbine, corn, dragonfly, nucleus, science beaker)

With Sarah back from vacation, it was full steam ahead at the high school today. A surprise guest appearance by Mai-Ann produced an adorable OWL and amazing DEER for our environmental stewardship panel!

The WHS Science & Environmental Stewardship mural is really coming along!
Sarah Macwilliams has been diligently perfecting the Chemistry section and Angela and Kate worked hard on the Environmental Stewardship wall throughout the afternoon.
Ann and Hillary worked hard on the organic agriculture wall while Sarah created some very realistic tomato plants.
Rebecca, Kate and Angela were the “flower children” of the day.

Angela Armijo, Alex Benepe and Kate Lupo went to Jerry’s Arterama and Brandman’s Paints for supplies on Saturday, June 27th.
Jerry’s Arterama was nice enough to donate $100 gift card to our project.
Brandman’s in Westport was nice enough to donate some eco-friendly NATURA paints to our project.
The Green Living Centre in Westport donated some Biodegradable “Go Green” drop clothes.
The Mural Team is so thankful for the generosity of these local green living and art supply businesses!
Lara Ditkoff, Alex, Angela and Kate then went back to the Weston High School to sketch out the mural and start painting… The organic agriculture, clean energy technology and environmental stewardship panels are underway…
(Thanks so much to John Lamonoca, our custodial supervisor, who was VERY helpful)

Sarah MacWilliams, Angela Armijo, Lara Ditkoff and Kate Lupo sketch out their ideas on the blank walls…. the project is underway!
For the visual content of the murals, we decided on the themes of (in order from the end of the hall) organic agriculture, clean energy technology, environmental stewardship, recycling, DNA, chemistry, forensics and computer technology.

Mural Kick-Off Meeting!
June 9th, 2009
8:30 PM
Lupo Residence
In attendance: Shana McCann, Rebecca Zhu, Hannah Wilk, Sarah MacWilliams, Ann Lupo, Kate Lupo, Regan Silverstein, Angela Armijo
Discussion of funding.
We have received a $450 grant from the PTO for painting supplies!! Thank you Thank you Thank you PTO!
WestonArts has also pledged $450 to pay for overtime custodial fees for Saturday painting days! Thank you thank you!
Discussed painting workdays in June and July
- Painters and volunteers should plan on leaving Wednesdays and Saturdays available for painting in June and July
Discussed project time line:
- Solidify designs by Friday, June 19th
- Start tracing Wednesday, June 24th
- Finish the mural by the end of July
Discussed Mural Themes:
Chemisty- molecules, periodic table–> cell phone, keyboard
Mackenzie Moosbrugger’s suggestions–robotic arm, keyboard, science mottos
Biology—evolution of the Weston student (homo sapien back packs), animals, cells with organelles?
Others: Earth Science, Conservation, Forensics, Clean Energy
**Will include visual recognition of WestonArts and PTO!
DECIDED UPON 6 (Tentative) THEMES FOR 6 WALLS
1st Wall: Abstract “environmental stewardship”- recycling symbol & vines?
2nd Wall: Biology, DNA==>trees?, cells, organelles?
3rd Wall: Evolution of the Weston Student (homo sapien with back packs)
4th Wall: Chemistry, potions with bubbles, bubbles have vignettes
5th Wall: Clean Energy (use Alex Benepe’s existing design)
6th Wall: Organic Garden turns into highway of electric cars.
Artists should start to do separate sketches for each of the 6 themes and then we will have another meeting VERY SOON to combine the ideas into designs that have a UNIFIED aesthetic that is not too complex, nor too simple.
We should plan on solidifying designs by June 19th.
We have 100 feet of mural to paint, so it can’t be too intricate, so let’s focus on images that really POP
Thanks for everyone’s ideas!
